Police are the visible face of a civilised society. They are everywhere. However, not many will be aware about the details of the official responsibilities of a police officer. Every police officer works under extreme stress, with no definite working hours, no assured holidays and most often deployed in conflict and hostile situations. At the same time, they are the first responders in crisis situations. Be it a natural calamity, accidents or any crime, police are the first to reach there. If this is the situation, can the police remain only as enforcers of law? No, they play many roles at the same time. They are rescuers, saviours, counsellors and compassionate fellow beings.

The challenge here is to make police officers remain compassionate and considerate while being efficient in their core duty as enforcers of law. There had been many attempts in this direction and Kerala Police is currently on a unique, innovative attempt. The Compassionate Communication and Interventions in Police (CCIP) programme, employing learning lessons like the Psychological First-Aid designed by WHO, got off to an impressive start with 168 Sub-Inspectors responding overwhelmingly to this at the recently held first session at the Kerala Police Academy. Since then, the project has attracted the attention of many national and international agencies like the office of the Director of National Police Academy, the Capacity Building Commission of the Union Government as well as police training and policy making organisations abroad like the London Metropolitan Police and the Rabdan Academy, UAE. Let’s hope that this prestigious programme of Kerala Police will go a long way in preparing grounds for a policing system based on job skills befitting the 21st Century and is based on compassion to the society.
